Neurology is the study of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) and how it controls your body. The neurology service for Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Hawke's Bay assesses people who may have diseases and disorders that affect the nervous system.

Services we provide

Neurology outpatient assessment clinics are held at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Outreach clinics are also held in:

  • Napier
  • Waipukurau
  • Wairoa.

If your healthcare provider thinks you may have a problem related to your nervous system they may seek advice and refer you to a neurologist for an opinion. A neurologist is a doctor who has specialised in diagnosing neurological complaints — these can affect:

  • how you think
  • what you can do physically
  • how your body manages itself.

The nervous system transmits messages around the body and to and from the brain using chemical and electrical signals.

The neurology department can perform diagnostic tests including:

  • an electroencephalogram (EEG), a test to detect abnormalities in the electrical activity of the brain — it is often used in the diagnosis of epilepsy
  • nerve conduction tests and electromyography (EMG) testing for abnormalities in peripheral nerve and muscle function.
