The Neonatal Unit (also known as Special Care Baby Units) at Whangārei Hospital provide comprehensive care for unwell or premature babies from the Northland region.

To help protect patients, whānau and staff, the number of tamariki and whānau visiting the Neonatal Unit is restricted and only parents or caregivers may visit.

About the neonatal unit
The units are staffed by experienced neonatal nurses and specialist paediatricians.
Services include:
- Care for unwell or premature babies born in Northland and more than 32 weeks gestation.
- Care for premature babies born less than 32 weeks in Northland until transfer to a tertiary hospital.
- Transfer to Auckland neonatal intensive care unit for any baby requiring specialist services and care.
- Care for babies returning from a larger centre (once stable), for ongoing care before going home.
- Specialist paediatricians provide antenatal consultation and attend the birth for women with specific risk factors (for example twin pregnancies).
- Assessment of babies in the postnatal wards.
- Follow-up clinics after discharge, particularly for babies who are born prematurely or have other difficulties with growth or development.
