The Nelson Hospital medical unit is an inpatient unit for the treatment of a wide variety of medical illnesses that do not require surgery, such as those affecting the:
- brain
- heart
- kidneys
- lungs.
The medical unit has 30 beds. There are 20 single rooms, 2 4-bed rooms and 1 2-bed room.
Each bed has its own phone. If you want to contact a patient ring the medical unit reception on 03 546 1644 and you will be put through to the patient if appropriate. These phones can be used for patients to make local calls out.
How long you are admitted to the medical unit depends on how unwell you are and your progress during your stay. Generally, patients stay about 3 days in the unit.
Services for those outside Nelson
The medical unit provides acute medical services to the greater Tasman region including Golden Bay and Murchison.
It also provides some services to Marlborough residents that are not available at Wairau Hospital.
Visitors
Whānau requests to stay to support their relative can usually be accommodated. Ask your nurse for more information.
We try to keep whānau informed during the stay. If you have any questions or concerns about your care, ring reception on 03 546 1644 and ask to speak to the nurse in charge.
Medical unit visiting hours
Nelson Hospital medical unit visiting hours are 2:30pm to 8:30pm every day.
If you want to visit outside of these hours, ask at reception.
