The Endoscopy service is provided by South Canterbury DHB employed General Surgeons and a Gastroenterologist on site at Timaru Hospital for patients resident in the South Canterbury region.   Guidelines for performing endoscopic procedures are based on the Endoscopy Governance Group for New Zealand (EGGNZ) standards.  Surgeons prioritise referrals into three categories Urgent, Non-Urgent and Surveillance.

The service is comprised of  Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy and Endoscopic Interventional procedures including but not exclusive to: stents, dilatation and PEG tubes, and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

GP’s refer new patients and those requiring regular surveillance for bowel polyps, Barretts oesophagus and family syndromes under the care of the NZ familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service.
