What to do if you become unwell

We know illness doesn't take a break over the holiday period.

Please call your general practitioner (GP) / medical centre, even on the weekends and public holidays. Your call will be transferred to the after-hours service if they're unavailable.

Should your usual GP practice / medical centre be closed on the non-stat days over the Christmas period, your call will automatically go through to an alternative practice.

If you're a visitor to South Canterbury and require a doctor, call any one of the practices, and you will be redirected to the after-hours/ duty doctor service.

Remember, the hospital's emergency department is for critical or life-threatening situations.

Please be aware, if you do present to the emergency department and your condition is better served by a GP practice / medical centre, you will be redirected to that service. We need the emergency department free for emergencies.
