At South Canterbury DHB we make it easy for staff to exercise and look after their personal health.
"Healthy by Choice" Survey
We want to empower employees to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. All staff have recently been offered a free health assessment, an online health report and tools to deal with health and lifestyle issues. The results of the survey will help each staff member to understand and monitor their own health status. They will also enable South Canterbury DHB to understand what common health issues our staff face.

Subsidised Gym Memberships for Staff
South Canterbury DHB has negotiated discounted gym membership agreements for staff with three Timaru providers:
Caroline Bay Trust Aoraki Centre (CBay)
Performance Training Company
Employee Assistance Programme
Six sessions of free counselling with a qualified professional are available for staff experiencing difficulties. This is to help employees overcome personal difficulties that are affecting, or have the potential to affect their work. This service is also available for staff who are experiencing any form of family violence.
Hadlow to Harbour Sponsorship and Free Entry for Staff
South Canterbury DHB is a major sponsor of the annual Hadlow to Harbour fun run and walk. This usually takes place each March. Members of staff who take part have their entry fee paid by the DHB and also receive a free t-shirt. Family members of staff taking part are subsidised to 50% of cost. The Hadlow to Harbour event is a great training goal for staff. In recent years between 100 and 200 South Canterbury DHB staff have participated each year.
Each year staff are challenged to increase their daily steps to the ideal 10,000 per day. South Canterbury DHB provides pedometers to all staff taking part in this Challenge. The annual Challenge goes for five weeks – one week setting targets and then four weeks of the Challenge.
South Canterbury DHB supports staff to cycle to work and this is the focus of Bikewise Month and "Go By Bike Day" each February. Bike stands are provided at each South Canterbury DHB site.
Sea to Sea Challenge
This community-wide Challenge encourages people to walk or run the same distance as the annual Kumara to Christchurch ‘Coast to Coast’ event over an extended time period. The Challenge annually involves greater than 130 businesses teams throughout South Canterbury. Held in the final week of September through to the first week of November, the Challenge is a popular part of South Canterbury workplace health. At the South Canterbury DHB, many departments have teams and during the Challenge ‘healthy’ weekly prizes are drawn for staff taking part. Usually close to 200 staff take part each year.
Lets Go Walking
Eight walking routes that start and finish at Timaru Hospital have been mapped out and are available for staff. Each route is a different length, with some planned to fit within a short lunch break.

South Canterbury DHB staff are encouraged to take part in:
the South Island Masters Games held in Timaru bi-annually

Nutrition Policy for Cafe/Vending Machines
South Canterbury DHB's nutrition policy requires most food on site to be healthy. The staff cafe provides staff with a good range of healthy, nutritious and affordable food, prepared fresh each day.
Breastfeeding Room for Staff
South Canterbury DHB has a spacious room furnished with comfortable lazy boy chairs and a couch and cushions situated on Level 5. This room can only be accessed with a swipe card which allows for privacy. There is a fridge for appropriate safe breast milk storage and hygiene facilities. There is also access to a changing table and toys. Art work donated by a previous staff member decorates the room. This facility is available to all staff members 24 hours a day.
Health and Safety Training
South Canterbury DHB offers staff regular training on health and safety concerns, including fire safety and manual handling training. Accidents in the workplace are monitored and investigated.
Staff Accomodation at Lake Tekapo
Thanks to donations over many years, South Canterbury DHB has been able to maintain holiday accomodation for staff at Lake Tekapo. Two units are available at minimal cost for staff needing a break. At busy times of the year like school holidays, a ballot is drawn to allocate the units.
