GPs Pull out of Discussions

Statement from Chief Executive Chris Fleming.

South Canterbury DHB is disappointed that GPs in Temuka and one GP in Geraldine have pulled out of talks to resolve issues around rural funding and the sustainability of an after-hours roster.

The DHB entered the discussions in good faith and halted any proposed changes to funding so a solution could be found that was acceptable to all parties. It is disappointing that the GPs have chosen to withdraw the after-hours on call GP roster service for their patients and not continue with the negotiation process.

I can reassure the people of Temuka and Geraldine that the DHB has made short-term arrangements so they can still access an after-hours service from next Tuesday when the GPs withdraw.

In an emergency, patients should still dial 111 for an ambulance.

In Geraldine, only Dr Scott is withdrawing after-hours services. The second practice in Geraldine, Four Peak Health (Dr Moginie), will continue to offer after-hours services to its patients.

In both Temuka and Geraldine, patients are asked to dial the After-Hours GP Line on 03 684 8209 for advice from a registered nurse who will then direct them to the appropriate care, including access to a GP if necessary (but not to one of the Temuka/Geraldine GPs who withdraw from the after-hours service).

Through our discussions with the Temuka/Geraldine GPs, we believe the number of patients needing after-hours GP services in these areas is very low. However, the DHB is committed to ensuring that an after-hours GP service will be provided to the people of Temuka and Geraldine in the long-term. We are working to find a sustainable solution. This includes initiating mediation under the dispute resolution procedures in the relevant contracts.

Further details about who the nurse might refer you to are here.

The DHB remains open to negotiating a solution agreeable to all parties.
