Elected member Murray Cleverley has been appointed as the next chair of the South Canterbury District Health Board, from 1 January 2010.

The current chair, Joe Butterfield is stepping down after nine years on the DHB Board as required by legislation. Before 2000 he chaired the South Canterbury Crown Health Enterprise (CHE).

Health Minister Tony Ryall confirmed the appointment today.

"Mr Cleverley was elected to the Board in 2007, and has experience in management and governance in a diverse number of fields."

"He chairs a number of small businesses and the Warbirds Over Wanaka Festival, and has been Chief Executive of the Aoraki Development Trust and the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce."

Mr Cleverley will bring to five the number of elected members chairing DHBs.

Mr Ryall also acknowledged the contribution to the Board and leadership shown by Mr Butterfield over many years.
