X-rays go Digital

A new system that replaces film x-rays with digital images went live at Timaru Hospital last week.

The Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) allows hospital staff to view images and results from x-ray, CT, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear medicine, fluoroscopy and angiography instantly on their computer screen.

Images can be magnified, rotated, and enhanced for a better view.

South Canterbury DHB Chief Executive Chris Fleming says it is an exciting time for the hospital.

"PACS will make us much more efficient and as a result, will improve the service we provide to our patients. Instant access to images and the ability to enhance them means a quicker and more accurate diagnosis," he says.

Staff will view the PACS images on new high-quality computer monitors that have been placed at strategic locations including in the wards, Emergency Department and theatres.

The monitors have a high resolution and images can be manipulated. For example, a radiologist can zoom in on a specific site of concern, or make the image darker or lighter, or view the image in different ways (enabled by the software) to concentrate on either bones or soft tissue.

The system also includes advanced computer-aided design for orthopaedic surgeons to use when planning their surgical procedures.

But the main benefits are to the patient. Medical records that are more detailed and accurate, and available to all specialists in a speedy way will ensure faster, better treatment.

Old film packets will still be available from Radiology for an indefinite period, and most X-Ray viewing boxes will remain available for as long as they are needed.
