Progress on Health Targets

Chief Executive Chris Fleming has made the following comments about the Quarter Three Health Target Results:

South Canterbury DHB has shown good progress towards meeting the Health Minister’s targets in some areas, with others needing more work.

Timaru Hospital continues to see 96 percent of Emergency Department patients admitted, discharged or treated within six hours.

Childhood immunisation rates also remain well over the national average with 91 percent of two-year-olds fully immunised.

The number of hospitalized smokers being offered help to quit has more than tripled in six months. This result will continue to improve thanks to the dedication of hospital staff who genuinely care for their patients.

The “Improved Access to Elective Surgery” target requires district health boards to perform, within a year, a set amount of elective surgery as agreed with the Minister. South Canterbury is only four percent away from meeting the Minister’s requirements and we expect to perform 100 percent of our elective surgery by the end of the financial year on June 30.

We will also continue to work with the regional cancer centres in the South Island to ensure that South Canterbury patients needing radiotherapy are treated in a timely manner. Our slip from 100% for Shorter Waits for Cancer Treatment Radiotherapy to 96% was caused by 2 patients. One of these was due to capacity restraints in Christchurch which is an issue for us. The second patient requested that their treatment be delayed.
